What is a good graphics card and graphics card manufacturer? PCI-E x16?

Ive been lookin for a new video card and am curious about them, just looking for some general information and what the basics are. I would also like to know some good makers etc. Your help will be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!|||There're 2 Biggest Graphic Card Manufacturere nowaday but a real good v-card manufacturer is depend on your own ideas which some people like ATI and other like nVidia, for myself I prefer ATI because it was the first card when i bought my first computer (ATI Radeon X850XT PE) both of those manufacturer are pretty the same because of the competition on each other, i suggest u go directly to their website forum and ask them or go to their website and look at sth like "about us" section. Here is the link for ATI : http://www.amd.com/us/products/Pages/graphics.aspx and here is for nVidia : http://www.nvidia.com/

Hope it help.|||There are two main manufacturers for graphics cards:

1) ATI/AMD

2) NVIDIA

Both manufacturers tend to make excellent products. However, in the latest generation of products, the ATI cards are more energy and heat efficient yet slightly less powerful. On the other hand, NVIDIA's latest products are slightly more powerful yet quite energy hungry and hot.

In terms of picking a card that is right for you, it's really hard to do without specifics. I would first write down a list of requirements for yourself:

1) What's your budget? GPUs run the gamut in prices from $50 dollars all the way up to just under $1000 dollars.

2) What's your primary use? Latest and greatest games at high resolution? Research and visualization? or just some videos?

3) Brand preference. Some people have it, you don't seem to so this isn't so much an issue.

Some great resources are easily found online for reviews and such, I've listed them in the sources section of the answer.

Finally, some cards to take a look at:

ATI HD 5970 --> fastest GPU card available, quite pricey. Uses two GPUs on one board.

NVIDIA GTX480 --> fastest SINGLE GPU card available.

NVIDIA GTX470--> stepped down from the GTX 480, cheaper.

ATI HD5870 --> fastest single GPU card that ATI offers.

ATI HD5850 --> slightly stepped down version, cheaper.

ATI HD5830 --> even more stepped down version, even cheaper.

These are the current generation "gamer" cards available. I'd personally recommend going with ATI HD 5850 or 5870 in terms of price/performance. I would go with ATI over NVIDIA for this generation however the two companies tend to one-up each other from one generation to the next.

When researching, what you really want to look for are real-world "benchmarks", these tell you how each card performs relative to the next when playing real games in "real" computers (albeit awesome ones).

hope that helps!

EDIT:

Right, the last thing I forgot to mention is that ATI/NVIDIA rarely make their own "graphics cards" persay. They make the GPU (the part that really counts the most towards performance and price, like a car's engine almost.) and design the reference (ie. standard board layout). Other companies then make and sell the videocards with or without modifcations to the reference layout.

So, you might see a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD5870 Vapor-X edition. That means, the board uses an ATI HD5870 GPU, is built by Sapphire, and is modified from the standard layout (usually an improvement is made, and a premium is charged).

On the NVIDIA side, you'll see eVGA, ASUS, or BFG using NVIDIA GPUs.

These brands don't overly matter quite frankly. Pick one with a lifetime warranty or a cool sticker :P. The only exception is when one of these companies makes an edition that is highly customized (like the Vapor-X edition i mentioned earlier).

1) pick the GPU you want. --> harder, needs more research

2) then pick the best iteration of that GPU. --> slightly easier.|||You will happy with any brand of graphic card, both nVidia and ATI make great chips which are used on major band of makers of graphics card. More the memory on card is nice screen. I have used and installed both makers and there been no noticeable different.|||5970 is the best card you can get out now
