Will any PCI Express motherboard fit any PCI Express video card?

My video card right now is a Geforce 7800 GTX 256mb. I paid like 600 bucks for it brand new when it first came out but it is like 5 years old now any seriously showing its age. So I am looking for a replacement for it and I see that now they have PCI Express x16 which is what my card is, but now they have PCI Express 2.0 and 2.1 x16. Will a PCI Express 2.0 and 2.1 card work in my mobo or is it a different architecture? Also is there any chance of finding a card that is Direct X 11 for 100 bucks or less that will be somewhat decent for World of Warcraft? The main problem with my card now is there are some new graphic effects they added for Cataclysm and my card can't run them because it doesn;t have DX11. Any help on this would be great and please do not reply if you are not knowlegable in PCs.|||PCI Express cards are backward (and forward) compatible so you can put any card in any PCIe x16 slot. Assuming you have the power supply to match and room for the card, of course. A v2.x card in a v2.x slot does perform better than a 1.x slot, but it will work.

DirectX 11 requires Windows 7 and a new generation video card - Radeon HD 5000+ or GeForce 400+ series. Your best bet for a DirectX 7 compatible card for WoW playing < $100 is the Radeon HD 5670. That will give smooth WoW play and handle the more demanding games at medium settings.|||It's all backward compatible. If you have a 16x slot, you can put any 16x card in it regardless of revision.

If you can squeeze a few more bucks into that budget, try to find a Radeon 5750 or even a 5770. Those will be your best bet in that price range.|||x16 cards work in x16 slots, should be just fine regardless of 2.0 or 2.1
